Hex Flange serrated nuts have a wide flange that acts as a fixed, integrated washer.

This assists the distribution of pressure of the nut over the part being secured.
The serrated surface on the underside of the flange provides a locking mechanism by angling into the foundation to prevent the nut from rotating in the loosening direction.
Flange nuts also remove the need for a washer to be added to each fastener assembly during installation.
