Hex bolts have a hexagonal head and typically feature a partially threaded shank. They are used to fasten two or more components together by inserting the bolt through aligned holes and securing it with a nut on the opposite side, or by threading it directly into a tapped hole.

When used with a nut, the bolt and nut work together to clamp and compress the materials, creating a secure joint. The nut is tightened using a socket and wrench or a spanner.

If the bolt rotates while the nut is being tightened, a second spanner or wrench may be required to hold the bolt head securely in place while the nut is tightened.

Note: To ensure optimum strength, corrosion resistance, and long-term performance, hex bolts should be selected from a material compatible with the associated washers and nuts. For example, use stainless steel hex bolts with stainless steel nuts and washers, and galvanised hex bolts with galvanised nuts and washers.
