Hex Conelock nuts feature a conical top and a flat bearing surface on the bottom, with chamfered corners for ease of use.

Their locking mechanism comes from a slight distortion in the top threads, allowing them to resist loosening under heavy vibration and shock.

Because only the bottom surface is flat and the locking feature is at the top, these nuts are designed to be installed in one direction only (top facing up), making them a one-way lock nut.
