Nord-Lock is the Swedish inventor / manufacturer of the wedge-locking fastener security system.

  • Nord-Lock Washers are a locking washer system made from two matching washers.
  • They feature radial teeth on the outer surfaces and cam surfaces on the inner faces.
  • When installed correctly, the cam angle is greater than the bolt thread pitch.
  • If the bolt attempts to rotate loose, the washer design forces the bolt to move upward instead, increasing tension and preventing loosening.
  • This creates a secure joint that remains tight even under severe vibration and dynamic loading.

Benefits

The patented wedge-locking system prevents fasteners from loosening when exposed to vibration and dynamic forces.

  • It works by using a wedge-locking effect to maintain joint security.
  • The design does not rely on additional components such as:
    • Springs
    • Thread-locking adhesives
    • Nylon locking inserts
  • This provides a reliable mechanical locking solution for applications where fastener integrity is critical.

Common Applications:

  • Heavy machinery and industrial equipment
  • Mining operations
  • Wind turbine structures
  • Railway and transport systems
  • Industrial processing
  • Other safety-critical bolted connections where loosening cannot be tolerated.

To ensure optimum strength, corrosion resistance, and long-term performance, washers should be selected from a material compatible with the bolt and nut. For example, use stainless steel washers with stainless steel fasteners, and galvanised washers with galvanised fasteners.

254 SMO Stainless Steel (also known as UNS S31254EN 1.4547) is a super-austenitic stainless steel designed for highly corrosive environments, especially those containing chlorides such as seawater. It is often called a 6% molybdenum stainless steel because of its high molybdenum content
