Flat washers are used to increase the bearing surface beneath a nut or bolt head, distributing the clamping force over a larger area.

They are particularly useful when fastening soft materials or components with oversized or irregularly shaped holes. A flat washer also provides a smooth, even surface for the nut or bolt head to bear against, helping to improve load distribution and reduce the risk of surface damage.

Flat washers are the standard washer used in most bolted connections and are typically installed beneath the nut, the bolt head, or both.

To ensure optimum strength, corrosion resistance, and long-term performance, flat washers should be selected from a material compatible with the bolt and nut. For example, use weathing steel washes with rod and nut equivalent.
